NGC 784

NGC 784 is a barred spiral galaxy located approximately 17 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum. It is a member of the Local Group, albeit on the periphery. Its relatively low surface brightness makes it a somewhat challenging object to observe, even with moderately sized telescopes.

NGC 784 was discovered on September 20, 1828, by Caroline Herschel, sister of William Herschel. It is classified as type SBd, indicating it is a barred spiral with loosely wound spiral arms. The galaxy is relatively small compared to other spirals, with an estimated diameter of roughly 40,000 light-years.

The star formation rate in NGC 784 is considered to be low. It exhibits relatively little active star formation compared to other spiral galaxies of similar type. This suggests that it may be in a relatively quiescent phase of its evolution.

The distance to NGC 784 has been measured using various methods, including the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method. The TRGB method relies on the relatively consistent luminosity of the brightest red giant stars in a galaxy to determine its distance.
