Globe Theatre (Newcastle Street)
The Globe Theatre (Newcastle Street) refers to a theatre formerly located on Newcastle Street in the City of Westminster, London. It should not be confused with Shakespeare's Globe, which is a modern reconstruction of a different theatre with a similar name.
The Globe Theatre on Newcastle Street opened in 1868, initially under the name "The New Globe Theatre and Opera Comique." It was constructed on the site of the former Lyceum Bazaar. The theatre primarily staged burlesques, comedies, and light musical entertainments.
Over the years, the Globe Theatre on Newcastle Street underwent several name changes and periods of closure. It was renamed the "Opéra Comique" shortly after opening, then reverted to The Globe later.
The theatre was eventually demolished in 1902 as part of the Aldwych and Kingsway improvement scheme. The thoroughfare of Kingsway now occupies the site where the Globe Theatre once stood. It left no lasting legacy beyond being one of the many smaller theatres that served the London entertainment scene in the latter half of the 19th century.
