Torment (1924 film)
Torment is a 1924 silent film directed by Maurice Tourneur. It is an American drama adapted from the novel The Untamed by Max Brand (Frederick Faust). The film stars Bessie Love, Owen Moore, and Jean Hersholt. The story revolves around a young woman, Jane (Bessie Love), caught between two men: the brutish and violent Ben (Jean Hersholt) who desires her, and the more refined and gentle Andy (Owen Moore) whom she loves. Ben's jealousy and possessiveness lead to significant conflict and place Jane in danger. The film is notable for Tourneur's visual style and use of dramatic landscapes. Though not as widely discussed as some of Tourneur's other silent works, Torment is considered a solid example of melodrama from the era. The film is believed to be lost.
