Ruger XGI

The Ruger XGI was a semi-automatic rifle chambered primarily in .308 Winchester, developed by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in the early 1980s. It was intended to be a military rifle candidate and a competitor to platforms like the M14. The XGI was a scaled-down version of Ruger's earlier .30-06 Springfield Ruger XMI rifle.

Key features of the Ruger XGI included a gas-operated action, a detachable box magazine, and a traditional wood stock. While the initial offering was in .308 Winchester, Ruger also produced a small number of XGI rifles chambered in .223 Remington/5.56x45mm NATO. The .223 variant was sometimes referred to as the Mini-14/30GB variant.

Despite demonstrating promise, the Ruger XGI project was ultimately discontinued due to production complexities, high manufacturing costs, and limited market interest, especially in the face of readily available and already-adopted military rifles. Relatively few XGI rifles were produced, making them a somewhat rare find for collectors today.
