Measure for Measure (album)
Measure for Measure is the ninth studio album by Scottish rock band Simple Minds, released on 15 September 1986 by Virgin Records.
The album marked a stylistic shift for Simple Minds, leaning towards a more atmospheric and orchestrated sound, departing from the band's earlier post-punk and new wave influences. It retained elements of their stadium rock style, developed during Once Upon a Time, but incorporated more introspective and ballad-like tracks.
Measure for Measure was produced by Bob Clearmountain and Simple Minds. The album's title is taken from William Shakespeare's play of the same name.
Notable tracks on Measure for Measure include "All the Things She Said," which reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart, and "Ghostdancing," a concert staple. The album itself reached number 1 in the UK Albums Chart and achieved platinum status. Other singles released from the album were "A Kind of Magic," which was featured in the film Highlander, and "Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)."
Although commercially successful, Measure for Measure received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising its ambition and sonic experimentation, while others found it to be overproduced and lacking the energy of their earlier work. Despite the mixed critical reception, the album remains a significant part of Simple Minds' discography and showcased the band's willingness to evolve their sound.
