Edward Greene (MP)

Edward Greene (16 April 1815 – 15 December 1891) was a British brewer and Conservative Party politician. He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury St Edmunds from 1865 to 1885, and then for Stowmarket from 1886 to 1891.

Born in Bury St Edmunds, Greene was a partner in the family brewing firm of Greene, King & Sons, a prominent brewery in East Anglia. He was a major landowner in the region and held several local offices, including serving as a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Suffolk.

In Parliament, Greene was a consistent supporter of Conservative policies. He was known for his contributions to debates on agricultural issues and licensing laws, reflecting his interests as a brewer and landowner. He was generally considered a traditionalist conservative, committed to preserving the existing social order.

Greene's parliamentary career spanned several significant periods of political reform. He was a staunch opponent of Irish Home Rule, a key issue during his time in Parliament. He remained an MP until his death in 1891.

He is buried at St Mary's Churchyard, Bury St Edmunds.
