HNoMS Bergen (1946)
HNoMS Bergen was a Town-class frigate of the Royal Norwegian Navy. Originally built for the Royal Navy during World War II as HMS St Albans, she was transferred to Norway in 1946. These frigates were built in the United Kingdom and were based on the US Navy's Edsall class destroyer escort design.
Bergen served primarily as a convoy escort and anti-submarine warfare vessel. She underwent several refits and modernizations throughout her service life to improve her capabilities. These modifications typically included upgrades to her sonar, radar, and anti-submarine weaponry.
Bergen played an important role in Norway's naval defense during the Cold War period, participating in numerous exercises with NATO forces. She was eventually decommissioned and scrapped, as newer and more capable warships became available. Details regarding the exact date of decommissioning may vary depending on the source. The Town-class frigates, including Bergen, represented a significant contribution to the Norwegian Navy's capabilities in the immediate post-war era and beyond.
