Deh Rais
Deh Rais, also spelled Deh Ra'is, is a term used in Afghanistan, particularly in rural communities, to refer to the village head or leader. It is a Dari term. The Deh Rais typically acts as an intermediary between the villagers and the government, resolving local disputes, and managing community affairs. The position often carries considerable influence within the village. Their authority stems from a combination of tradition, respect, and their ability to mediate and represent the community's interests. The Deh Rais might also be responsible for collecting taxes, organizing community labor for infrastructure projects like irrigation, and representing the village in inter-village councils or dealings with outside organizations. The role is often inherited or achieved through consensus among the villagers, reflecting the specific customs of the region.
