Poronaysk

Poronaysk is a town and the administrative center of Poronaysky District in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, located on the east coast of Sakhalin Island at the mouth of the Poronay River, approximately 290 kilometers (180 mi) north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

History: Founded in 1869 as the military outpost of Tikhmenyovsky, it was renamed Poronayskoye in 1883, after the river. Between 1905 and 1945, as a result of the Russo-Japanese War, the town, along with the southern half of Sakhalin Island, was controlled by Japan and was known as Shikuka (敷香). After World War II, the area was returned to the Soviet Union, and the town was granted town status and given its current name, Poronaysk, in 1947.

Geography: Poronaysk is situated in a coastal plain area on the eastern side of Sakhalin Island. The Poronay River flows through the town before emptying into the Sea of Okhotsk. The landscape surrounding the town is characterized by taiga forests and wetlands.

Climate: Poronaysk has a humid continental climate, characterized by cold, snowy winters and cool, humid summers.

Economy: The economy of Poronaysk is primarily based on fishing, forestry, and the processing of seafood. There is also some agricultural activity in the surrounding area. The town serves as a transportation hub for the region.

Administrative and Municipal Status: Within the framework of administrative divisions, Poronaysk serves as the administrative center of Poronaysky District. As a municipal division, the town of Poronaysk is incorporated within Poronaysky Municipal District as Poronaysk Urban Okrug.
