Kevin Smith (New Zealand actor)

Kevin Smith (16 March 1963 – 15 February 2002) was a New Zealand actor best known for his role as the Greek god Ares in the television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.

Smith was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and began his acting career in local theatre productions. He gained wider recognition in New Zealand television before landing the role of Ares, which significantly boosted his international profile. He portrayed Ares from 1995 to 1999 in Hercules and Xena, becoming a popular recurring character known for his cunning and manipulative nature.

Beyond his role as Ares, Smith also appeared in films such as Desperate Remedies (1993) and Flatmates (2000). He had guest roles in other television series, including Lawless and Young Hercules.

Smith died on 15 February 2002, at the age of 38, following an accidental fall on a film set in China. The injury resulted in a traumatic head injury. His death was widely mourned by fans and colleagues, who remembered him for his talent, humor, and dedication. He is survived by his wife, Sue, and their three sons.
