9th Division (Vietnam)

The 9th Division was a division of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), also known as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), during the Vietnam War. It was a main force division, meaning it was a large, well-equipped unit intended for sustained offensive operations. The 9th Division was primarily active in the III Corps Tactical Zone, particularly in areas northwest of Saigon.

The division was formed in the mid-1960s from existing PAVN units and new recruits. It played a significant role in several major battles and campaigns, including the Battle of Loc Ninh in 1967, the Tet Offensive in 1968, and the Easter Offensive in 1972. Its involvement in these campaigns often involved heavy fighting and significant casualties on both sides.

The 9th Division was known for its tenacity and its ability to operate in difficult terrain. It was a key component of the PAVN's strategy to undermine the South Vietnamese government and ultimately reunify Vietnam under communist rule. Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, the 9th Division continued to exist as part of the unified Vietnamese armed forces. Details about its specific activities and deployments after the end of the Vietnam War are less readily available in English-language sources.
