NGC 482
NGC 482 is a lenticular galaxy located approximately 86 million light-years away in the constellation Phoenix. It was discovered on October 23, 1835, by astronomer John Herschel.
Lenticular galaxies, classified as S0, possess characteristics intermediate between spiral and elliptical galaxies. They have a central bulge and a disk, like spirals, but lack prominent spiral arms. NGC 482 appears relatively featureless in most observations, with a smooth, disk-like structure and a bright central region.
Due to its distance, detailed studies of individual stars and nebulae within NGC 482 are challenging. Research primarily focuses on its overall morphology, radial velocity, and estimated distance based on redshift. It's considered a member of a larger group of galaxies, though the precise composition and dynamics of that group are still under investigation.
