NGC 264

NGC 264 is a lenticular galaxy located in the constellation Sculptor. It is estimated to be approximately 180 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy was discovered on August 30, 1834, by astronomer John Herschel.

As a lenticular galaxy, NGC 264 exhibits characteristics of both spiral and elliptical galaxies. It possesses a central bulge and a disk, similar to spiral galaxies, but lacks prominent spiral arms. Its disk is composed primarily of older stars and exhibits little ongoing star formation. The appearance of NGC 264 is typically smooth and featureless compared to spiral galaxies.

NGC 264 is a member of the Sculptor Group, a loose group of galaxies associated with the nearby Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253). Its classification is SAB0, indicating a weakly barred lenticular galaxy.
