The series follows Elliot Alderson (played by Rami Malek), a cybersecurity engineer and hacker who suffers from social anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and delusions. Elliot is recruited by an anarchist known as Mr. Robot (played by Christian Slater) to join "fsociety," a hacktivist group aiming to destroy E Corp, one of the largest conglomerates in the world and a company Elliot is employed by. E Corp is presented as a symbol of corruption and corporate greed, and fsociety aims to liberate people from debt and financial control.
The show is notable for its exploration of themes such as income inequality, corporate corruption, mental health, technology, and the nature of reality. It frequently uses unreliable narration and incorporates elements of conspiracy theories and social commentary.

The series also gained recognition for its realistic portrayal of hacking techniques and cybersecurity concepts. It won several awards, including Golden Globe Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards.
