Zaovine

Zaovine is a mountainous region and a village located in western Serbia, within the municipality of Bajina Bašta. It is best known for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the presence of the Zaovine Lake (Zaovinsko jezero), a man-made reservoir on the Tara Mountain.

The Zaovine Lake was created by damming the Beli Rzav river, providing a crucial source of hydroelectric power and water for the region. It's popular for recreation, including fishing, swimming, and boating. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring the Tara National Park.

Zaovine is also notable for its scientific importance. The Josif Pančić research station is located there, dedicated to studying the local flora and fauna. A significant discovery was made in the area: the rediscovery of the Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika) in its natural habitat, after it was initially believed to exist only in a much smaller, more isolated location.
