Titinius

Titinius was a Roman officer who served under Gaius Cassius Longinus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar. He is best known for his role in the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC.

During the battle, Titinius was sent by Cassius to scout out a group of horsemen. Due to a misinterpretation of events, Cassius believed that Titinius had been captured and killed by the enemy. Distraught by this presumed loss and believing the battle was lost, Cassius ordered his freedman, Pindarus, to kill him.

Upon returning to the camp, Titinius discovered Cassius's body and learned of the tragic misunderstanding. Overcome with grief and guilt for inadvertently causing Cassius's suicide, Titinius took his own life using the same sword that Cassius had used.

Titinius's loyalty and devotion to Cassius, as well as the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, are often cited as examples of Roman virtue and the importance of honor in Roman society. His story is notably depicted in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar.
