List of Communist Party (Finland) breakaway parties
This article lists political parties that splintered from the Communist Party of Finland (SKP) at various points in its history. The SKP, throughout its existence, faced internal ideological disagreements and external pressures that led to the formation of several distinct political entities. This list focuses primarily on parties that explicitly positioned themselves as alternatives to the SKP based on disagreements over policy, strategy, or leadership.
-
Socialist Workers Party (STP) (1920-1923): Founded in 1920 as a legal front for the banned SKP, but existed as a separate entity, later integrated back into the SKP structure. Its initial independence can be considered a form of breakaway, even if temporary and strategic.
-
Socialist Electoral Organisation of Workers and Smallholders (STPV) (1926-1930): A legal front organization established after the STP was banned, serving a similar purpose and eventually integrated back into the SKP's structure. Like the STP, its temporary separation from the direct SKP control can be seen as a form of strategic breakaway.
-
Democratic Alternative (DeVa) (1986-1990): While not a direct breakaway party per se, DeVa was a broad left coalition heavily influenced by Eurocommunists and dissidents within the SKP and represented a significant departure from the SKP's traditional pro-Soviet line. Many SKP members joined DeVa, highlighting a significant ideological split. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, DeVa largely dissolved, and its remnants joined other parties, including the Left Alliance.
-
Communist Workers' Party – For Peace and Socialism (KTP) (1988-2019): Formed by hardline Stalinist elements within the SKP who opposed the party's drift towards Eurocommunism and ultimately its internal reforms and acceptance of perestroika and glasnost. The KTP advocated for a return to Marxist-Leninist principles and maintained close ties with other orthodox communist parties internationally.
-
For Communism - Towards Unity! (Kommunistien Liitto - Yhtenäisyyteen!): A smaller Marxist-Leninist group that emerged from factions dissatisfied with both the SKP's reformist trajectory and the KTP's rigid dogmatism. The group aimed for a more united communist movement.
-
Communist Party of Finland (Unity) (SKP(y)): The SKP itself effectively fractured in the mid-1980s due to deep ideological divisions. While the SKP continued to exist, a significant faction formed a parallel organization that maintained the SKP name but adhered to a more orthodox Marxist-Leninist ideology. The Left Alliance was formed by the more Eurocommunist faction, leaving a rump SKP that attempted to rebuild, but experienced significant internal turmoil. This group eventually registered as the Communist Party of Finland (Unity) to distinguish it from the larger Left Alliance, laying claim to the SKP's historical legacy.
