Moxie (trimaran)

Moxie was a custom-built trimaran designed and sailed by Phil Weld in the 1980 Singlehanded Transatlantic Race (OSTAR). Weld won the race, setting a new record for monohulls (as trimarans were classified then) of 17 days, 23 hours, and 12 minutes.

Design and Construction: Moxie was a 44-foot trimaran known for its lightweight construction and innovative design for the era. She was built from wood and fiberglass, emphasizing strength and speed. Weld collaborated with Dick Newick, a renowned multihull designer, on the design modifications for his specific racing needs.

Significance: Weld's victory aboard Moxie marked a significant moment in the history of singlehanded sailing and multihull racing. His performance showcased the potential of trimarans for long-distance ocean racing and contributed to their growing popularity. While technically classified as a monohull for the 1980 OSTAR, the performance generated significant discussion and debate about multihull classification in future races.

Fate: After Weld's successful race, Moxie was sold. Her subsequent history and current whereabouts are not widely documented.
