Maung Aye
Maung Aye (born 1937) is a Burmese (Myanmar) military officer who served as the Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the ruling military junta of Myanmar, from 1993 to 2011. He held the rank of Vice Senior General in the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces).
As Vice Chairman, Maung Aye was considered the second most powerful figure in the SPDC after Senior General Than Shwe. He wielded significant influence over military and economic affairs, playing a crucial role in government decision-making. He was known for his traditional military background and loyalty to the junta's principles.
Following the 2010 general election and the transition to a nominally civilian government in 2011, Maung Aye retired from his official positions. His influence gradually diminished as Myanmar underwent political and economic reforms. While no longer holding formal power, he remains a significant figure in Myanmar's history due to his long tenure at the highest levels of the military regime.
