Markyate

Markyate is a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England, close to the Bedfordshire border. It lies on the A5 road, approximately nine miles northeast of Hemel Hempstead.

Historically, Markyate was divided into two parts: Markyate Cell, which lay in Bedfordshire, and Markyate Street, which lay in Hertfordshire. This division stemmed from the presence of the ancient Watling Street (now the A5), which served as the county boundary in that location.

The village's history dates back to Roman times, with evidence of Roman occupation in the area. In the 12th century, a Benedictine priory, Markyate Priory (also known as Markyate Cell), was founded by Geoffrey de Mandeville and his wife, Rohese. This priory played a significant role in the village's development and later became a private residence.

Markyate's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and passing trade along the A5. More recently, it has become a commuter village due to its proximity to London and other major towns. The village has local amenities, including shops, pubs, and a primary school. It is also situated close to the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a popular location for outdoor activities.
