William Barry (bishop)

William Barry (1841-1929) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, theologian, philosopher, and author. Born in London, he was educated at Oscott College and the English College, Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1867.

Barry held several academic positions, including Professor of Philosophy at Oscott College and Professor of Theology at St. Mary's College, Oscott. He was known for his conservative theological views and his strong opposition to modernism.

A prolific writer, Barry authored numerous books and articles on a wide range of topics, including philosophy, theology, history, and literature. Some of his notable works include The New Antigone (a novel), Newman (a biography of John Henry Newman), The Papacy and Modern Times, and Hopes and Fears for Art. He also contributed frequently to leading Catholic periodicals.

Barry was appointed Bishop of Chatham in 1921, a titular see, a position he held until his death in Dorchester, England in 1929. His writings and lectures significantly contributed to Catholic intellectual life in England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
