Bepress
Bepress, stylized as bepress, was a software and services company specializing in solutions for academic publishing and institutional repositories. Founded in 1999, Bepress offered a suite of tools designed to support the scholarly communication lifecycle, including platforms for managing open access journals, electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), and digital repositories.
Its flagship product was Digital Commons, a cloud-based institutional repository platform. Digital Commons allowed universities and research institutions to collect, preserve, and showcase the scholarly output of their faculty, students, and staff. The platform facilitated discovery, access, and long-term preservation of a wide range of content, including research articles, working papers, conference proceedings, datasets, and multimedia materials.
Bepress also provided services such as hosting, training, and consulting to support its customers in managing their scholarly content and promoting open access initiatives. The company aimed to empower institutions to control their scholarly narrative and enhance their research impact.
In August 2017, Bepress was acquired by Elsevier, a global information analytics company specializing in science and health. Following the acquisition, Digital Commons continued to be offered as part of Elsevier's suite of research solutions. The acquisition brought Bepress's technology and expertise into Elsevier's broader portfolio, further expanding its capabilities in the areas of open access and institutional repositories.
