Hugh King (Medal of Honor)

Hugh King (1848 – January 1, 1916) was a United States Navy sailor who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean Expedition in 1871.

King served as a landsman aboard the USS Benicia during the battles in Korea. On June 11, 1871, he participated in the assault on and capture of the Korean forts. For his bravery and meritorious conduct during this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

His official Medal of Honor citation reads: "On board the U.S.S. Benicia, during the attack on the Korean forts, 11 June 1871. Displaying great coolness and courage, King was conspicuous for his gallantry under fire."

King was born in New York and died in Los Angeles, California. He is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery. His Medal of Honor recognized his bravery in a significant, albeit controversial, military engagement in Korea.
