Typhoon Cary (1987)

Typhoon Cary was a powerful tropical cyclone that impacted the Philippines and southern China in July 1987. Forming as a tropical depression in the western Pacific Ocean, Cary rapidly intensified, reaching typhoon strength before making landfall in the Philippines. The typhoon brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the archipelago, causing significant flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage. Casualties were reported, primarily due to drowning and collapsed buildings.

After crossing the Philippines, Cary weakened slightly but remained a significant tropical cyclone. It continued its westward track, eventually making a second landfall in southern China, near Hong Kong. The storm brought similar impacts to China, with widespread flooding, wind damage, and disruption to transportation. Damage to agriculture was also reported in both the Philippines and China.

Following its landfall in China, Cary weakened rapidly as it moved inland, eventually dissipating over the mainland. While not the strongest typhoon of the 1987 Pacific typhoon season, Cary's impacts were significant due to its direct hits on densely populated areas in both the Philippines and China. Recovery efforts were undertaken in both countries to address the immediate needs of affected populations and to repair damaged infrastructure. The storm served as a reminder of the vulnerability of coastal communities in Southeast Asia to the destructive forces of tropical cyclones.
