Dinner (play)
Dinner is a dark comedy play written by Moira Buffini. It premiered in London at the National Theatre in 2002.
The play centers around Paige, a wealthy and intellectual hostess who plans an elaborate dinner party to celebrate her husband Lars' publication of a controversial book. The carefully curated guest list includes Wynne, a conceptual artist; Hal, a scientist; Sian, a newsreader; and Adam, a last-minute addition after Paige accidentally dials his number instead of one belonging to a potential lover.
As the evening progresses, carefully constructed social facades crumble under the weight of alcohol, revealed secrets, and unexpected events. The elaborate courses of the meal mirror the unraveling of the characters' relationships and the descent into chaos. The play explores themes of infidelity, ambition, societal expectations, and the superficiality of modern relationships within an upper-class setting.
The setting is a minimalist, modern dining room, reflecting the characters' attempts to project an image of sophistication and control. The play is known for its sharp wit, dark humor, and unsettling exploration of human nature.
