M-22 (Michigan highway)
M-22 is a scenic state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan. Entirely within the Leelanau Peninsula of Northwest Michigan, it runs approximately 116 miles (187 km) along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Beginning near Traverse City at a junction with M-72, it proceeds northward through communities like Suttons Bay, Northport, and Leland, before looping around the tip of the peninsula at the Grand Traverse Light. From there, it turns southward, continuing along the lake through Glen Haven and Empire before terminating at US 31 near Benzonia.
M-22 is known for its stunning views of Lake Michigan, rolling hills, orchards, vineyards, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Its picturesque beauty has made it a popular destination for tourists, particularly during the summer and fall. The road has become a symbol of the Leelanau Peninsula and a significant contributor to the region's tourism industry. The highway's designation was formalized in the late 1930s, although the roads it follows predate its official numbering.
