Cartlidge

Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue found in many areas of the body in humans and other animals, including joints between bones, the rib cage, the ear, and the nose. It is not as hard and rigid as bone, but it is stiffer and less flexible than muscle.

Cartilage is composed of specialized cells called chondrocytes, which produce a large amount of extracellular matrix. This matrix is rich in collagen fibers, proteoglycans, and other non-collagenous proteins. The extracellular matrix provides the cartilage with its characteristic properties, such as its flexibility, strength, and resilience.

There are three main types of cartilage:

  • Hyaline cartilage: This is the most common type of cartilage and is found in the articular surfaces of joints, the nose, trachea, and ribs. It has a glassy appearance and a smooth surface, allowing for low-friction movement in joints.

  • Elastic cartilage: This type of cartilage is more flexible than hyaline cartilage due to the presence of elastic fibers in its matrix. It is found in the external ear and the epiglottis.

  • Fibrocartilage: This is the strongest type of cartilage and contains a large amount of collagen fibers. It is found in intervertebral discs, menisci of the knee, and the pubic symphysis. It can withstand strong compression and tensile forces.

Cartilage does not contain blood vessels or nerves, so it relies on diffusion for nutrient supply and waste removal. This poor blood supply contributes to the slow healing process of cartilage injuries.

Cartilage plays several important roles in the body:

  • Support: It provides structural support for various tissues and organs.
  • Shock absorption: It cushions joints and absorbs shock, protecting bones from damage.
  • Facilitation of movement: It provides a smooth, low-friction surface for joint movement.
  • Growth and development: It serves as a template for bone growth during development.

Damage to cartilage, such as from injury or osteoarthritis, can lead to pain, stiffness, and loss of joint function. Treatment options for cartilage damage include pain management, physical therapy, and surgery.
