Lowrider (magazine)
Lowrider was a magazine dedicated to the lowrider culture, primarily focusing on automobiles, art, music, and lifestyle associated with the lowrider community, particularly within the Chicano and Mexican-American communities. Founded in 1977 in San Jose, California by Sonny Madrid, Larry Gonzalez, and David Nuñez, Lowrider quickly became a prominent voice and platform for showcasing the artistry, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of lowriding.
The magazine featured custom-built lowrider cars with detailed photographs and technical specifications, highlighting the elaborate paint jobs, hydraulics, interiors, and other modifications that define the lowrider aesthetic. Beyond the cars, Lowrider also covered related topics such as Chicano art, music (particularly oldies and Chicano rap), fashion, and community events.
Lowrider aimed to celebrate and preserve Chicano culture, provide a sense of community for lowrider enthusiasts, and challenge negative stereotypes associated with the culture. The magazine played a significant role in popularizing lowriding beyond its core communities and influencing car culture more broadly.
Publication ceased in 2019 following the sale of its parent company, TEN: The Enthusiast Network, to Discovery, Inc., and the subsequent discontinuation of several print titles.
