Little Sahara (Kangaroo Island)
Little Sahara is a sand dune system located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Covering approximately two square kilometers, it is situated near Vivonne Bay. The area is characterised by its vast expanse of white sand dunes, reaching heights of up to 70 meters in some places.
The dunes were formed over thousands of years by wind action depositing sand eroded from the coastal landscape. Prevailing winds have shaped the dunes into a variety of forms, including parabolic and transverse dunes.
Little Sahara is a popular tourist destination offering activities such as sandboarding, tobogganing, and walking. Several businesses operate tours and equipment rentals in the area. The dunes are also of interest to geologists and environmental scientists studying dune formation and coastal processes.
The fragile nature of the dune ecosystem means it is important to manage visitor access and activities to minimize environmental impact. Measures are in place to protect the vegetation on the edges of the dune system and to prevent erosion.
