HMS Harwich (1695)
HMS Harwich was a 48-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1695. She was built at Harwich Dockyard, from which she derived her name.
The Harwich participated in numerous naval engagements during her service. Details of specific battles and actions are fragmented in naval records, but fourth-rate ships like the Harwich typically served in fleet actions, convoy escort duties, and patrols. The design of the Harwich generally followed the conventions of late 17th-century English shipbuilding, intended to provide a balance of firepower, maneuverability, and seaworthiness.
The Harwich was eventually rebuilt at Deptford Dockyard in 1706, effectively becoming a new ship. She continued to serve under the same name after this rebuild. Her subsequent career followed a similar pattern of fleet service and escort duties.
The ultimate fate of HMS Harwich (1695/1706) is recorded as being sold out of the service in 1719.
