Francesco Negri (photographer)
Francesco Negri (1841-1924) was an Italian photographer and pioneer in the field of aerial photography in Italy. He was born in Tromello, near Pavia.
Negri is best known for his work documenting the city of Pavia and its surrounding areas, particularly through the use of balloon-borne cameras. He began experimenting with aerial photography in the late 19th century, using gas balloons to lift cameras high above the ground. His work provides valuable historical documentation of the urban landscape of Pavia during that period.
Beyond aerial views, Negri produced a variety of photographs, including portraits and landscapes. His photographs were frequently exhibited and won awards, contributing to the recognition of photography as a fine art form in Italy.
Negri's photographs are now held in numerous public and private collections, and are considered significant contributions to the history of Italian photography and visual documentation. His innovative approach to aerial photography established a precedent for future generations of photographers and cartographers.
