Martingale (collar)

A Martingale collar, also known as a limited-slip collar, humane choke collar, or Greyhound collar, is a type of dog collar designed to provide more control over a dog without the risk of choking that a traditional choke chain presents. The collar is constructed with two loops of material that are connected by rings.

When properly fitted, a Martingale collar will loosely fit around the dog's neck. When the dog pulls or attempts to back out of the collar, the smaller loop tightens, providing gentle pressure on the neck. The pressure is distributed more evenly than with a traditional choke chain, making it a safer option. The tightening action also discourages pulling and escape attempts.

The Martingale collar is especially popular for breeds with necks that are wider than their heads, such as sighthounds (Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, etc.), as these breeds can easily slip out of traditional collars. However, they are suitable and can be beneficial for any breed.

It is crucial that the Martingale collar is properly fitted. When tightened fully, there should still be a gap of about two fingers width between the rings. If the collar tightens completely and chokes the dog, it is either improperly fitted or the wrong size. Martingale collars should only be worn during walks and should be removed when the dog is unattended to prevent accidental entanglement.
