John Sweeney (Canadian politician)

John Sweeney (born March 21, 1955) is a Canadian politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of Oshawa from 2004 to 2006, and again from 2008 to 2011. He is a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP).

Sweeney was first elected in the 2004 federal election, defeating incumbent Liberal MP Judi Longfield. He served on various committees, including the Standing Committee on Finance and the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.

In the 2006 federal election, Sweeney lost his seat to Conservative candidate Jim Flaherty, then Minister of Finance.

Sweeney ran again in the 2008 federal election and successfully regained his seat in Oshawa, defeating Flaherty. During this term, he served as the NDP's critic for international trade.

In the 2011 federal election, Sweeney was defeated by Conservative candidate Colin Carrie.

Prior to entering federal politics, Sweeney served as a city councillor in Oshawa. He has also been involved in community activism and social justice issues.
