John Everard (photographer)

John Everard (1894-1975) was a British photographer and author best known for his studies of the human form, often referred to as figure studies. He was born in Melbourne, Australia and emigrated to England in the early 20th century.

Everard’s work gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, catering to artists, sculptors, and art students who used his photographs as reference material. He meticulously documented the anatomy and musculature of his models in a variety of poses. His style blended technical precision with an artistic sensibility, resulting in images that were both informative and aesthetically pleasing.

He authored several books on the subject, including Living Models, Second Sitting, Model in Movement, and Artist's Model. These books contained hundreds of photographs accompanied by his commentary on the poses, lighting, and anatomical details. His publications were widely circulated and influential in art education and practice for several decades.

Everard's work is now considered a significant contribution to the history of figure photography and a valuable resource for artists interested in the human form. His photographs continue to be studied and appreciated for their clarity, composition, and insight into the human body.
