Spanish Synagogue (Prague)

The Spanish Synagogue (Španělská Synagoga) in Prague, Czech Republic, is the newest synagogue in the Prague Jewish Town, built in 1868 in Moorish Revival style. It stands on the site of the Altschul, the oldest synagogue in the Jewish quarter.

Its distinctive appearance is largely due to its interior and exterior decorations inspired by the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain, reflecting the Orientalist architectural trend of the 19th century. The architect was Vojtěch Ignátz Ullmann, and the interior design was created by Antonín Baum and Jiří Stibral.

Following World War II, the synagogue served as a depository for confiscated Jewish property. It reopened in the 1950s as part of the Jewish Museum in Prague. Today, it houses an exhibition focusing on the history of Jews in Bohemia and Moravia from the Enlightenment to the present day. The exhibition includes information about prominent Jewish families, important historical events, and the Holocaust. Services are not regularly held in the Spanish Synagogue, with its primary function being a museum and a significant historical monument.
