F-clamp

An F-clamp, also commonly referred to as a bar clamp or speed clamp, is a type of clamping device resembling the letter "F" in its profile. It is used to hold a workpiece securely while it is being worked on, typically in woodworking, metalworking, and other similar applications.

The F-clamp consists of a fixed arm (the top of the "F") and a sliding arm (the bottom of the "F") joined by a threaded spindle. The fixed arm is a static bar, usually made of steel or cast iron. The sliding arm is a shorter bar that can move freely along the main bar, allowing the clamp to accommodate workpieces of varying thicknesses. At the end of the sliding arm is a swivel foot or pressure pad that distributes the clamping force evenly over the workpiece surface and helps prevent damage.

The threaded spindle is attached to the end of the fixed arm, extending towards the sliding arm. Turning the handle or screw at the end of the spindle advances or retracts the spindle, applying or releasing pressure against the sliding arm. The sliding arm is designed with a locking mechanism, often a series of notches or teeth, that engages with the fixed arm, allowing the clamp to maintain pressure on the workpiece.

F-clamps are available in a variety of sizes and clamping capacities, ranging from small clamps suitable for delicate work to large, heavy-duty clamps capable of exerting considerable force. The depth of the throat (the distance from the bar to the spindle) also varies, allowing for clamping workpieces at different distances from the edge.

The primary function of an F-clamp is to securely hold materials together while adhesive cures, while parts are being assembled, or while performing operations such as cutting, drilling, or welding. They offer a strong and adjustable clamping force, making them a versatile tool in many workshops and construction settings.
