Jaws (ride)

The Jaws ride was a popular attraction at Universal Studios theme parks in Orlando, Florida (1990-2012), Hollywood, California (1976-2003), and Universal Studios Japan (2001-present). Based on the blockbuster film Jaws, the ride simulated a boat tour through the Amity Island harbor, which is repeatedly attacked by a large animatronic great white shark.

The ride experience typically involved a large pontoon boat carrying guests, piloted by a skipper who served as both a narrator and a participant in the simulated danger. The boat would encounter various hazards, including explosions, sinking vessels, and the titular shark itself, which would make numerous attempts to attack the vessel. The skipper's quick thinking and actions were essential to the survival of the passengers.

Different versions of the ride existed at the various Universal Studios locations, each with slightly different scenes and storylines. The original version at Universal Studios Hollywood was plagued with technical difficulties and was closed relatively early in its lifespan. The Orlando version, which was the most elaborate and longest-running, featured multiple animatronic sharks, pyrotechnics, and a dramatic finale where the shark was supposedly destroyed.

The Jaws ride was known for its intense and thrilling experience, making it a favorite among park visitors. The closure of the Orlando version in 2012 was met with disappointment from fans, although the space was later redeveloped for a new attraction based on the Harry Potter franchise. The Jaws ride continues to operate at Universal Studios Japan.
