John Cantwell (bishop of Meath)

John Cantwell (bishop of Meath) was an Irish Roman Catholic clergyman who served as the Bishop of Meath from 1830 until his death in 1866.

Cantwell was born in Kilcogy, County Cavan, Ireland. He received his education at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, and was ordained to the priesthood. Before his appointment as bishop, he served as a parish priest in various locations within the Diocese of Meath.

In 1830, Cantwell was appointed Bishop of Meath by Pope Pius VIII. During his episcopate, he was known for his dedication to the Catholic Church in Ireland and his efforts to promote education and religious observance amongst his flock. He oversaw the building and renovation of numerous churches and schools within the diocese.

Cantwell was a prominent figure during a period of significant social and political change in Ireland, including the Great Famine. He actively worked to alleviate the suffering of his people during this difficult time, organizing relief efforts and advocating for government assistance.

John Cantwell died in Mullingar in December 1866, having served as Bishop of Meath for over 36 years. He is remembered for his pastoral care and his contributions to the religious life of the diocese.
