Jo Grant
Josephine "Jo" Grant (later Jo Jones) was a fictional companion of the Third Doctor in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. She was played by actress Katy Manning from 1971 to 1973.
Character Biography:
Jo Grant was a civilian operative assigned to UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) headquarters. Initially, her qualifications were somewhat lacking, having gained the position due to family connections rather than experience. However, she quickly demonstrated a willingness to learn and a deep loyalty to the Doctor, becoming a valuable and resourceful assistant.
Throughout her tenure, Jo displayed courage, compassion, and a natural curiosity, often putting herself in harm's way to help the Doctor and others. While not a scientist herself, she possessed a keen intellect and a knack for understanding the Doctor's explanations, even if she occasionally misinterpreted them for comedic effect.
Jo travelled with the Third Doctor to various times and planets, facing numerous threats including Daleks, Cybermen, Autons, and other alien invaders. She developed a strong bond with the Doctor, seeing him as a mentor and father figure.
Her travels with the Doctor came to an end when she chose to remain on Earth and marry Professor Clifford Jones, a Nobel Prize-winning environmentalist, in the episode "The Green Death." The Doctor, saddened by her departure but understanding her choice, gave her a parting gift of a supersonic hearing aid.
Later Appearances:
Katy Manning reprised the role of Jo Grant in the 2010 Doctor Who spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures in the two-part story "Death of the Doctor." The story reveals that Jo and Clifford had several children and grandchildren, and that Jo continued to travel the world as an environmental activist. She also briefly encountered the Eleventh Doctor.
