Dennis Smith (New Zealand footballer)
Dennis Smith (born 3 March 1938) is a retired New Zealand international football (soccer) player.
A defender, Smith represented New Zealand at international level, earning 58 A-international caps. He captained the national team on numerous occasions and was a key member of the side that narrowly missed qualification for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw with New Caledonia on 8 November 1967, and ended his international career with a 3-1 win over Australia on 29 February 1984, a match in which he was captain.
At club level, Smith played for several teams in New Zealand, including Mount Wellington, where he was a prominent player for many years. He was known for his strong tackling, leadership qualities, and commitment to the game.
After retiring from playing, Smith remained involved in football, contributing to coaching and administration. He is considered one of New Zealand's most capped and respected football players.
