Jerry Sanders (politician)

Jerry Sanders (born July 14, 1950) is an American politician and businessman who served as the 35th Mayor of San Diego, California from 2005 to 2012.

Early Life and Career:

Born and raised in San Diego, Sanders began his career in law enforcement, serving in the San Diego Police Department for 26 years, eventually rising to the rank of Chief of Police. Prior to becoming mayor, he also served as the President and CEO of the United Way of San Diego County and the President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor of San Diego:

Sanders was elected Mayor of San Diego in a special election in 2005, succeeding Dick Murphy who had resigned. He was re-elected in 2008. As mayor, Sanders focused on improving the city's financial stability, attracting businesses, and promoting tourism. Key initiatives included pension reform, streamlining city services, and infrastructure improvements. He was a strong advocate for maintaining a balanced budget and attracting private investment to San Diego.

Post-Mayoral Career:

After leaving office in 2012, Sanders became the President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, a position he previously held before becoming mayor. He continues to be involved in regional economic development and civic affairs.
