Amanda Foreman (historian)

Amanda Foreman (born July 8, 1968) is a British-American historian, writer, and broadcaster. She is known for her expertise in British history, particularly the Georgian era and the American Civil War.

Foreman is the author of several acclaimed books, including:

  • Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1998), a biography of the 18th-century socialite Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. This book won the Whitbread Biography Award and was later adapted into a film, The Duchess (2008).
  • A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War (2010), a comprehensive examination of British involvement and influence during the American Civil War. This book was a New York Times bestseller and won the Fletcher Pratt Award for Civil War History.
  • The Ascent of Woman (2013), a cultural history of women's power and influence throughout history, which was also adapted into a four-part BBC documentary series of the same name.
