Governor Irwin (fireboat)

The Governor Irwin was a fireboat operated by the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY). Named for New York State Governor Charles H. Irwin, she served the city from 1929 until her retirement in 1959. During her service, she was stationed at various locations around New York Harbor and played a significant role in firefighting efforts on the waterfront and in the harbor itself. The Governor Irwin was known for her powerful pumping capacity and maneuverability, making her an effective tool in combating fires aboard ships, at piers, and in waterfront buildings. She was eventually replaced by more modern fireboats and ultimately sold for scrap. Her decommissioning marked the end of an era for a specific type of firefighting vessel deployed in the city's waters.
