Kiiova

Kiiova (often transliterated as Kyiv) is the capital and most populous city of Ukraine. Situated on the Dnipro (Dnieper) River in north-central Ukraine, it is a major industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center of Eastern Europe.

Kiiova boasts a rich history, dating back to at least the 5th century CE. It served as a crucial trading post and, during the 9th century, became the capital of the Eastern Slavic civilization of Kyivan Rus', a powerful medieval state that laid the foundations for Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian cultures. This period is considered the golden age of Kiiova.

Throughout its history, Kiiova has been ruled by various powers, including the Mongols, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union. Ukraine declared its independence in 1991, with Kiiova remaining its capital.

The city is a significant transportation hub, with a well-developed infrastructure including airports, a metro system, and railway connections.

Kiiova is home to numerous historical landmarks, including the Saint Sophia Cathedral, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), and the Golden Gate. These sites, along with others, contribute to the city's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In recent years, particularly since 2014 and especially following the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Kiiova has been a focal point of geopolitical conflict and resilience. The city has faced significant destruction and displacement, yet it continues to serve as a symbol of Ukrainian national identity and resistance.
