Middleham

Middleham is a market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it is located on the River Ure, about 11 miles (18 km) south-west of Leyburn.

History:

Middleham's history is heavily influenced by its castle, Middleham Castle, which became one of the main power bases in northern England. The castle was originally built by Robert FitzRanulph in the 12th century, later passing to the Neville family and then the Crown. Richard III spent much of his childhood in Middleham and used it as his northern power base. His only son, Edward of Middleham, was born and died there. After Richard's death at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, Middleham declined in importance.
