Banzui'i

Banzui'in (盤水院) is the name of a Buddhist temple belonging to the Tendai sect, located in Ueno, Tokyo, Japan. It is formally known as Kisshō-in Banzui'in (吉祥院 盤水院). The temple is associated with the story of Banzuiin Chōbei, a popular Edo period otokodate (chivalrous commoner) who resided in the area and is said to have aided the common people. The current temple buildings were reconstructed after being destroyed during World War II. Banzui'in is known for its annual festival held in September, celebrating Chōbei's spirit and commemorating the commoners of the Edo period. The festival often features performances, food stalls, and traditional activities. The temple site is relatively small and peaceful, providing a quiet escape from the surrounding bustling Ueno district. It serves as a local landmark and a cultural touchstone connecting modern Tokyo with its historical past.
