Sardines (Inside No. 9)
Sardines is the first episode of the first series of the British dark comedy anthology television programme Inside No. 9, written by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. First broadcast on BBC Two on 5 February 2014, it set the template for future episodes of the series.
The episode takes place entirely within a large wardrobe during a family birthday party. Various family members enter the wardrobe to play a game of Sardines, where one person hides and the others must find and squeeze into the same hiding place. As more people join, secrets and tensions within the family are revealed. The tight confines of the wardrobe force the characters into uncomfortable physical proximity, mirroring the uncomfortable truths that are exposed.
The episode's confined setting and ensemble cast are hallmarks of Inside No. 9. The plot relies heavily on dialogue and character interaction to build suspense and reveal the narrative. The conclusion of "Sardines" features a significant plot twist and a dark, comedic resolution typical of the series. The episode is notable for its exploration of family dynamics, secrets, and the claustrophobia of close relationships.
