Gurdwara

A Gurdwara (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ, gurdu'ārā or gurdwārā, meaning "gateway to the Guru" or "door to the Guru") is a place of worship for Sikhs. Gurdwaras serve as community centers, offering food (Langar), education, and social services. Every Gurdwara has a Nishan Sahib, a Sikh flag, flying outside.

The central feature of a Gurdwara is the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, which is treated with utmost respect and reverence. The Guru Granth Sahib is installed on a raised platform (Palki) under a canopy and is the focal point of the worship.

Key aspects of a Gurdwara include:

  • Guru Granth Sahib: The central religious text, treated as the living Guru.
  • Langar Hall: A community kitchen where free vegetarian meals are served to all, regardless of religion, caste, gender, economic status, or ethnicity. This embodies the Sikh principles of equality and service.
  • Sangat: The congregation of Sikhs.
  • Kirtan: The singing of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib.
  • Sewa: Selfless service, a cornerstone of Sikh practice.

Visitors to a Gurdwara are expected to remove their shoes, cover their heads with a scarf or turban, and maintain respectful behavior. Gurdwaras are open to people of all faiths and backgrounds. The upkeep and management of a Gurdwara are usually carried out by the local Sikh community.
