Vanniyar

The Vanniyar, also known as Vanniyakula Kshatriya, are a social group found primarily in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, India. They claim descent from the Agnikula lineage, a mythological line of warriors born from fire. Historically, they were primarily involved in agriculture, and many served as soldiers and chieftains during various periods of Tamil history.

The Vanniyar community has a significant presence in Tamil Nadu politics, having formed various political parties to advocate for their interests, including reservation in education and employment. They have historically demanded greater representation and recognition within the state. The assertion of Kshatriya status and the pursuit of backward class status have been key aspects of their social and political movements. The community's socio-economic status is diverse, ranging from landowning farmers to agricultural laborers.
