Richard Griffith (general)
Richard Griffith (1814-1869) was an American soldier who served as a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Griffith later moved to Mississippi, where he became a successful businessman. Prior to the war, he served in the Mississippi state militia.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Griffith entered Confederate service and rose quickly through the ranks. He commanded the 1st Mississippi Infantry Regiment, and later a brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. He saw action in several major battles, including the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Antietam.
Griffith was mortally wounded at the Battle of Savage's Station during the Seven Days Battles in June 1862. He died several weeks later in Richmond, Virginia. His contributions to the Confederate cause were recognized and he is considered one of Mississippi's notable Confederate generals. His brigade continued to serve under other commanders throughout the war.
